ASIAN GARDEN AT THE JACKSONVILLE ZOO & GARDENS
An Asian Garden is planned to open in 2008 at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. The Asian Garden is currently in the design phase and scheduled to break ground in August 2007. The project, budgeted at $2 million, will include a koi-pond, a bridge and pavilion (designed by JAAA member TTV Architects), a dragonfish waterfall, a bamboo forest with water misters for kids to run through and cool off, etc. The Garden will not be specific to any Asian country but will have an atmosphere of an Asian village embracing the cultures of the entire Asian community in Jacksonville. The pavilion will be built with traditional Asian materials and techniques.
JAAA Board members visited the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens recently. Zoo Executive Director Dennis Pate and Bob Chabot, Director of Horticulture, gave an in-depth presentation about the Asian Garden. They also took JAAA directors on a tour of the impressive Zoo and Gardens and the Trout River Plaza project currently underway.
According to Tri Vu of TTV Architects, "This project will give the local Asian community a chance to help create a gift Jacksonville's residents and visitors can enjoy for generations to come."
JAAA is excited to lead the efforts in promoting the Asian Garden in the Jacksonville Asian American community and encouraging potential donors to support the project.
